BMW Launches i Sub-Brand ; All-New i3 & i8 To Arrive In 2013

2013 i3 & i8
BMW has officially introduced the eco-friendly i sub-brand and the future model lineup, consisting of the i3 and i8, to be launched in 2013. Previously known as the BMW Megacity Vehicle, the 2+2 seater i3 full-electric vehicle is designed specifically for use in an urban setting—BMW’s first such attempt with a production model. Based on the BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept, the i8 is a plug-in hybrid car that provides the performance of a supercar but sips fuel like a small car.
Both models are built on the LifeDrive architecture, which features an aluminium chassis and a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell. BMW claims that the new architecture, designed around the drivetrains, and lightweight materials will cancel out the extra weight of the batteries on board.
To be visually differentiated from other BMWs by a blue ring around the BMW logo, blue grille surround and aerodynamic side skirts among others, the i3 and i8 will roll out from a dedicated line at the German automaker’s Leipzig plant. BMW will maximise economies of scale by using the same electric motor, lithium-ion batteries and other powertrain components for both models.
